ĭunkirk: Behind The Score of Hans Zimmer’s Supermarine. My next step from this research and putting these methods to practice is to include this in an orchestration to the narrative video to see whether the idea of Shepard tones could work and contribute to the building of tension.ĨDio Shepard Tones. Finally, the Pink tracks are all the higher octaves which need to decrease in volume.Īfter putting two methods to practice, I decided that the best method for me personally and sounded more like the Shepard tones used by Hans Zimmer was Method two, the pitch bend and volume automation. The two Yellow tracks are the mid-range so the volume of these was kept the same throughout. The Green tracks are the lower octaves and these increased in volume. Secondly, I adjusted Volumes for each track. Therefore, I slightly randomised my gradients so they would start on the same note and progress and at different speeds. Firstly I tried then all pitch-bending at the same rate but I did not feel this had the same feel as Hans Zimmer’s Shepard Tone as it had no clashes. I chose to layer up more octaves to see whether It will give a greater effect in the whole atmospheric sound of the piece. I began method 2 by putting 7 Octaves of a C note and putting Pitchbend on all of them. (listening to audio above 80dB for an extended period of time is harmful and could cause hearing loss.) Note: Please keep Volume low initially when reviewing these tracks to avoid any damage to the ear. Finally, the bottom line of notes is the lower octave and the velocity begins at 1 and increasing to the maximum of 127. The middle line is the middle octave so its velocity remains at around 75. The top line is the Highest pitch and this starts off loud and becomes quiet (starting velocity at 127 and scaling down to 1). Red indicates loud, green indicates average volume, and Dark Blue/Purple indicates Quiet.

Here I changed the velocity between each note by 5. Pitch Bending a single note and using automation to adjust the volume.įor both Methods, I used a synth from East West’s ‘Play’ Plug-in called ‘ Aisle 5 Lead MOD.
